Baby Development 6 months

Your 6 month old baby

Baby Development 6 months
By 24 weeks old your baby will probably be able to…

Physical Development

  • Shows an interest in everything
  • Wants to explore
  • Puts everything in her mouth
  • Moves her head to follow people or objects
  • Demonstrates good head control and is becoming able to sit without support
  • Plays with his feet
  • Co-ordinates her limbs

Sensory Development

  • Will follow someone else’s activity from across the room
  • Moves to see something better

Cognitive Development

  • Is able to reach for things due to developed depth perception
  • Aware that she has one mother
  • Co-ordinate objects

Language and Communication

  • Responds with eye contact when you talk to her, turning away when they need something else
  • Makes vowel sounds
  • Laugh with pleasure
  • She can recognise her name
  • Learn links between words and actions

Emotional and Social Development

  • Show trust
  • Show distress if you leave the room
  • Feel isolated
  • Be wary of strangers
  • Be aware of feelings – crying when they hear other babies cry
  • Shows impatience and boredom

Baby Development 6 months: Developmental leaps

Each leap brings changes in behaviour, awareness, mood and sleep and your baby may seem unsettled and clingy

14-20 weeks – becoming more active, noisy and responsive, with a need to explore

22-27 weeks – more exploration of her world, aware of distance and can feel separated from you and isolated
