In 2011, inspired by friends in London and West Yorkshire, I launched the North East Sling Library (NESL). Since then I have met hundreds of families – this year I have made 472 sling hires. I have been able to play a small part in each family’s parenting journey and this is something I am immensely proud of. From small beginnings we have grown and grown and last month we turned four, with seven regular sessions a month and two days a week for 1:1 appointments. I want to say Happy Birthday North East Sling When I founded NESL I could never imagine the impact it would or could have on my life. It is no longer a hobby. It is my life. I want to say thank you to those who have supported me.
Firstly, my husband because without him I would not still be here. He has been there from the start. Without his support the library would not be what it is. His support has allowed me to give up teaching and focus my energies on NESL. Next, the fabulous ladies who have helped NESL grow: Sharon, Carla, Emma, Kirsty, Rachel and Suzie. Ladies, the parts you play mean NESL is what it is. Sharon and Carla came to our first session in 2011, they came to our 4th birthday.
For each family I have helped, whether that has been simply to provide a sling to use on a holiday or as part of an active parenting choice, thank you. Thank you for recognising what I’m trying to achieve, thank you for letting me be part of your journey. When NESL started in 2011 I had just 23 slings which I begged and borrowed – I now have over 240. I have plans for the coming year and I hope NESL will continue to grow, I hope I can continue “to help the North East carry their babies big and small” and I hope to be able to carry on doing so for the foreseeable future.
